Essex County Council is one of the largest local authorities in England, serving a population of approximately 1.9 million residents across a diverse mix of urban, rural and coastal communities. Led by Council Leader Peter Harris since May 2026, the Council delivers services including education, children's services, adult social care, public health, transport and economic development.

Essex is home to a dynamic economy with strengths in advanced manufacturing, logistics, life sciences, clean energy and digital industries. Its strategic location, major transport links and proximity to London make it a significant contributor to national economic growth. However, parts of Essex still experience significant deprivation, health inequalities, skills shortages and challenges linked to rural isolation and coastal disadvantage.

The Council's vision is to create a county where everyone can achieve their potential, contribute to their community and benefit from sustainable economic growth. Through partnership working with district councils, health services, businesses and the voluntary sector, Essex County Council is focused on improving outcomes for residents while supporting long-term social and economic resilience.
