Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council

Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council serves communities across south-east Wales, including Ebbw Vale, Tredegar, Brynmawr and Abertillery. The leader of the council since the May 2026 elections is Cllr Stephen Thomas. The area has a strong identity shaped by its industrial and mining heritage, which played a significant role in the development of the South Wales Valleys.
While Blaenau Gwent has made progress in attracting new investment and regenerating former industrial sites, it continues to face challenges linked to long-term economic restructuring. These include lower-than-average earnings, health inequalities, economic inactivity and child poverty. The Council works closely with regional and national partners to support economic renewal, improve public services and create opportunities for residents.
The Council's vision focuses on creating a thriving, sustainable and inclusive county borough where people can access good jobs, quality housing, strong communities and opportunities to improve their wellbeing. Through collaboration with residents, businesses and the voluntary sector, Blaenau Gwent aims to ensure that no community is left behind.
