Public service reform: Healthy working economy
Addressing rising economic inactivity due to poor health is firmly on the governments agenda. Our focus will aim to support a system-wide approach to health and employment that also factors in good work, poverty and childcare.
The UK is the only developed country where the proportion of working-age people not employed or seeking work has continued to rise since the height of the pandemic, and public finances are on an unsustainable path due in part to healthcare costs.
The government has committed to work closely with mayoral authorities and local government, not least via the platform of the Get Britain Working White Paper, to develop detailed proposals and test new ways of working to tackle health-related economic inactivity.
